After writing By George, Oscar Hammerstein outlined a course of studies for Sondheim, having him write four musicals to learn the craft. Hammerstein instructed, "For the first one, take a play you admire and turn it into a musical." He picked Beggar on Horseback by George S. Kaufman and Marc Connelly. He started All That Glitters while attending Williams College, and finished it in 1948, the summer between his sophomore and junior years.
The hero of the play is Neil, a songwriter who has to choose between marrying a rich woman and his true love, a poor woman living in an attic. Sondheim got permission from Kaufman to perform the musical at Williams, and in March, 1949, it ran for three performances. Five songs from All That Glitters were published: "When I See You," "I Must Be Dreaming," "I Love You, Etc." I Need Love" and "Let's Not Fall in Love."
