In 1957, Harold Prince and Arthur Laurents had the idea about making a musical from Jean Anouilh's 1948 play Ring Round the Moon. Sondheim wrote a waltz for the project, but Anouilh rejected the idea and refused to release the rights.

Assassins is about how society interprets the American Dream, marginalizes outsiders and rewrites and sanitizes its collective history. "Something Just Broke" is a major distraction and plays like an afterthought, shoe horned simply to appease.
