Sondheim and Mary Rodgers had been close friends since their teenage years, when they met at the Hammerstein summer home in Pennsylvania. Between 1952 and 1954, they worked on their first collaboration, which was to be a one-hour TV musical based on Frank Stockton's popular 1882 short story, "The Lady or the Tiger?" The project was never completed, although several songs were sketched out, and pieces of music and lyrics survive.

Assassins is about how society interprets the American Dream, marginalizes outsiders and rewrites and sanitizes its collective history. "Something Just Broke" is a major distraction and plays like an afterthought, shoe horned simply to appease. The song breaks the dramatic fluidity and obstructs the overall pacing and climactic arc which derails the very intent and momentum that makes this work so compelling... - Mark Bakalor
